Basically Wicked or Just Timid and Afraid?

If

         Murder

         Rape

         Incest

         Robbery

         Child-molesting

         Coercion

         Are cardinal crimes

            in all civil societies

            and its offenders

            punishable by law

Then

         How come that

         the history books of all major religions

         name persons

         who were

            murderers

            rapists

            incestuous

            robbers

            paedophiles

            or

            oppressors

Yet people

         Revere and look up to them

            as

            prophets

            sages

            gurus

            or

            conquerors

Why

         those who we reject and abhor

            in our daily, civil life

         we accept and adore

            in our collective spiritual life

Are we

         basically wicked and depraved

            who nurture evil thoughts and desires

         or

         basically timid and afraid

            who accept tyrants as our guides?
